GreenU partnership makes recycling toner cartridges easy

Toner cartridge recycling can be confusing; and sometimes instead of making the extra effort, it can be easier to toss them in the garbage rather than deal with the hassle of returning them. While it may seem like a trivial task, recycling toner has a substantial impact on the environment and the University’s commitment to sustainability.

GreenU and the University’s department of mail operations have teamed up with UPS to create a seamless process to recycle toner for faculty, staff, and students working and learning on campus. Get started today by using the following steps and watching the GreenU video tutorial.

1. Remove the toner cartridge from your printer.
Four toner cartridges can be shipped together.

2. Place the toner cartridge back into its original packaging.
Reusing packaging helps to cut down on waste and with the shipping process.

3. Package at least four toner cartridges together for return.
By bundling multiple toner cartridges, you can help reduce emissions from shipping. Reuse a box or use tape to make a tidy and even package without requiring a larger box.

4. Print your shipping label.
Visit miami.edu/recycle, click on “Toner cartridges recycling,” follow the link to Staples or Canon, and then follow prompts to a free shipping label.

5. Secure the label and tape the box closed.
Once you have printed your label, secure it to your package. If you are reusing packaging, make sure to remove old stickers or labels from the box. Tape the box closed, and it is ready to be shipped.

6. Return for free.
There are a few different options for shipping toner cartridges to be recycled.

  • If you have a UPS account, schedule a pick-up.
  • Take the package to the UPS Store at Lakeside Village on the Coral Gables Campus.
  • Notify the University’s department of mail operations.
  • If you are located on the Marine or Medical campuses, visit miami.edu/recycle for more information on recycling station locations.
