Take advantage of on-campus optical services

With a handful of locations across South Florida, the Optical Express at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute makes caring for your eyes a smooth experience. Patients can access a number of services through the one-stop concept, which launched late February 2020.

“The Optical Express makes it easy to get an appointment and get to the office, especially during the pandemic,” said Karen Insignares-Garcia, assistant vice president, physician and provider relations at the University of Miami Health System. Within the past year, Insignares-Garcia and her college-aged daughter were both able to get fitted for contact lenses and her son, 13, found new glasses at the Optical Express at the Coral Gables Lennar Foundation Medical Center. “It’s been a great experience for my family,” she added. “The team is customer-oriented and it’s located right on campus.”

In addition to the Gables location, there is an Optical Express on the Medical Campus and outlets in Plantation, Palm Beach Gardens, and Naples. The Optical Express program complements the work at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute—which has been ranked as the No. 1 eye hospital in the country by U.S. News & World Report for 19 years.

“Our goal is to provide easy access to patients, whether they have vision insurance or are looking for low-cost, self-pay exams,” said Angel G. Perez, director of Optical Express. Perez and his growing team of doctors and optometric technicians provide a seamless experience for patients. Those who need to see a specialist are referred to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

The Optical Express team offers comprehensive eye exams for adults and children and expedited services on prescription lenses, including same-day pickup and home delivery. Each location is equipped with an in-house lab to provide same-day services. Additionally, a state-of-the-art digital lens lab at the Optical Express Medical Campus, which services all locations, allows the team to fabricate prescription lenses from start to finish, including antireflective coating, transition lenses, blue light protection, polarized lenses, and specialty lenses.

“We focus on the comfort of the patient and offer eyewear solutions for every individual need,” said Digmary Sanchez, an optician at Optical Express. Patients can choose from a competitively priced selection of eyewear, including plastic and polycarbonate single vision lenses, and an array of new and designer frames, sunglasses, and athletic eyewear.

“In the spirit of helping others, Optical Express donates a new pair of eyewear for every new order placed,” noted Perez. He explained that the team often works with individuals who may be limited financially or struggle with low vision to provide resources and tools that improve their quality of life.

Discounts are available for the University community, including family and friends. These include comprehensive eye exams for $50, a 30 percent discount on prescription eyewear lenses, and a 20 percent discount on frames, including designer brands. Currently, the Optical Express accepts vision insurance, including VSP, EyeMed/Aetna, Davis Vision, Spectera, and Superior Vision.
