Local organization seeks help to provide support for Afghan refugees

Through time spent with our patients, students, faculty, staff, and local community, volunteers are an important part of our University’s mission to transform lives through education, research, innovation and service. We are committed to fostering a culture of belonging where everyone at the University feels valued and has the opportunity to add value.

For more than 100 years, Jewish Community Services (JCS) of South Florida has provided a safety net of social and health services to Miami Dade County and is providing resettlement services to Afghan refugees who have been provided safe passage into the region. JCS is seeking volunteers to assist with services such as registration for government identification and driver’s licenses; arranging medical appointments; explaining transportation options and ride-sharing services; establishing banking services; and navigating the Miami-Dade County public school system. Individuals who speak Pashto or Dari are in particular demand to assist.

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities through JCS, please contact Sandy Ala, division director of case management services, at sala@jcsfl.org or at 305-917-2162. Visit Community Outreach Volunteer Opportunities for more information on volunteer opportunities at the University.
