More than 160 faculty and staff members gathered for the graduation of the Essentials of Leadership (EOL) Series 19 cohort. Hosted by Human Resources’ Talent and Organizational Development, EOL is a four-month program that provides participants with critical leadership skills to deliver results and excellence through others. Eighty leaders, impacting a network of 559 direct reports, are now armed with the tools to lead with purpose. Since its inception, more than 1,180 faculty and staff leaders have completed the program.
During the event, graduates took center stage to share how their EOL experience redefined their approach to leadership, as they grow and empower others, to make a lasting impact. The inspiring highlights from the graduates that are shared below may leave you eager to embrace your leadership journey.
Impacting the Mission
Norma Magallanes Benitez, MS, manager, research support
“My favorite thing about working at the University is the work that we do and how it contributes to the mission of the University in such an impactful way. Our office works with investigators to develop protocols for investigator-initiated trials for cancer patients. This enables there to be a novelty of options for cancer patients.”
Power of Patience and Collaboration
Bryan Ensel, director, housing technology and occupancy management
“One of the biggest things I have learned in EOL is learning to take a breath and listen before I respond. The clarity to think things through and build on ideas is a powerful skill in anything we do across the University. What I enjoy most about working at the U is the people. EOL has opened up doors to cross-collaborate with other colleagues.”
Coaching and Listening
Heleven Mezerene, MSN, RN, supervisor, nursing
“One of the valuable things I have taken from EOL is coaching. Learning to step back and listen to my team. Perception is an important concept—to take a step back and ask your team what they think worked, identify opportunities, and ask for their perspective on how we can achieve our goals.”
EOL graduates are putting their leadership skills into action. Coaching, delegation, and effective feedback are just a few tools EOL participants mentioned using to build stronger teams and a more collaborative work environment.
