Faculty Senate names 2019 Outstanding Teaching and Distinguished Faculty Scholar awardees

Dr. Donald Spivey and Dr. Harry W. Flynn, Jr., will be honored this spring at the 2019 Faculty Senate Awards Ceremony.

University of Miami Faculty Senate voted unanimously at its Jan. 30 meeting to honor two exceptional members of the UM faculty with its prestigious awards, the Outstanding Teaching Award and the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award.

The Outstanding Teaching Award, which is presented yearly to a faculty member in acknowledgement of their excellence and a distinguished record of teaching, will be awarded to Dr. Donald Spivey, professor of history and Cooper Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Harry W. Flynn, Jr., professor in the department of ophthalmology and J. Donald M. Gass Chair in ophthalmology at the UM Miller School of Medicine will be presented with the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award in recognition of his outstanding scholarly achievement and dedication.

In November, the Senate voted to award the James W. McLamore Outstanding Service Award to Dr. Norman H. Altman, professor emeritus in the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at the UM Miller School of Medicine.

Professors Altman, Spivey, and Flynn will receive their awards at the 2019 Faculty Senate Awards Ceremony, which will take place on Monday, April 8, at 5 p.m. at the Robert and Judi Prokop Newman Alumni Center. After receiving his award, Dr. Flynn will present a short lecture on his research.
