Find an instructor that can keep you motivated with a good playlist and the right energy and you’re bound to enjoy the sweat session enough to keep coming back week after week. With a dozen free group exercise classes available to members of the Herbert Wellness Center (HWC) on the Coral Gables campus, you’ll have 12 more reasons to join—and new ways to spice up your workout routine.

Whether you’re looking to add more strength training or a boost of cardio to your week, there’s a class for you. View the group exercise schedule to find the class that fits your schedule. Read on to learn about some of the most popular classes and what you can expect. 

  • Ab attack is a 30-minute, core-sculpting workout.
  • Cardio kickboxing combines boxing techniques with fast-paced cardio movements that keep your heart rate up.
  • Gutts-n-butts focuses on toning the lower body and core through various body-weight exercises and equipment. 
  • Studio cycle is an indoor spin class that guides riders through hills, intervals, jumps, and sprints. Music video cycle class is set to music videos. 
  • Total body conditioning is a full-body workout with a mixture of cardio, strength, and core work.
  • Total knockout—or TKO—helps you torch fat with intense intervals of boxing, weight lifting, and conditioning drills. No boxing experience is required but 8-12 oz boxing gloves are recommended to get the full effect.
  • TRX circuit classes incorporates the TRX suspension trainer for total body resistance exercise. 

Know before you go

Group exercise classes are available to current HWC members and/or their official guests who are at least 13 years of age. Entry is first come, first served and classes close 10 minutes after the scheduled start time. Depending on the room and nature of the class, there is a limit on the number of participants. 

Pro tip: Studio cycling classes fill up quickly so grab yourself a spot by registering beforehand.

Sweat and save

UM faculty and staff, and their spouses/domestic partners, are eligible to earn a 20-percent rebate on the cost of HWC membership through the SHAPE-UP program. Additionally, employees enrolled in the Well ’Canes incentives program may be eligible to earn points by participating in the annual Walking ’Canes program or logging daily physical activity. 

Pro tip: A minimum of 30 minutes of continuous activity can earn you two points per day, and a maximum of 300 points per year.

Pro tip: UM students and full-time employees, along with their spouses and dependents, who have membership to the Herbert Wellness Center also have access to the UHealth Fitness and Wellness Center located on the medical campus.
