Have you signed up to fight cancer?

Each participant has a reason for joining the annual Dolphins Cancer Challenge, which benefits Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Learn about one employee’s personal story.

Ten years ago, when Sandra Vasallo’s aunt was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer that forms in plasma cells, her family turned to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for help. Vasallo, director of total rewards for Human Resources, knew that the team at South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center would provide preeminent care to her family. Today, almost a decade later, the team of researchers and cancer doctors at Sylvester have worked closely with Vasallo’s aunt to manage her cancer through innovative trials and medications, ensuring that she can enjoy her time with family and friends.

In honor of her aunt’s ongoing battle with cancer and the life-changing work being done at Sylvester, Vasallo is preparing for this year’s Dolphins Cancer Challenge. “The DCC is a moving experience for everyone involved, including families who have been affected. This year team HR is participating in the 5K and we’re going to come in stronger than ever,” said Vasallo.

The DCC partnership with the Miami Dolphins is unique because the money raised goes directly to research and clinical trials—dollar for dollar. Everyone benefits from this partnership and the work it supports. The University’s research component sets it apart from other cancer foundations.
