Sergio M. Gonzalez, senior vice president for University Advancement and External Affairs at the University of Miami, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States.
The NCLR Board of Directors includes 23 elected members who represent all geographic regions of the U.S. and all Hispanic backgrounds.
“It is an honor to be elected to serve on the NCLR Board of Directors,” Gonzalez said. “I look forward to working with this talented group of individuals, as we all strive to create opportunities and raise awareness for the issues that impact our national community.”
At the University, Gonzalez oversees all development, communications, alumni relations, and community and government affairs. Under his leadership, the University has received numerous accolades for its work in Advancement, and has raised nearly $3 billion for scholarships, research, academic and medical programs, as well as other initiatives through its Momentum and Momentum2capital fundraising campaigns. Gonzalez also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute, serves on the Board of the Adrienne Arsht Performing Arts Center Trust, Orange Bowl, TotalBank, and Breakthrough Miami. He has received a number of national and local awards for his work in fundraising and his civic leadership, including the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Bill Colson Leadership Award.
His previous appointments have included serving as Chief of Staff to Miami-Dade County Executive Mayor Alex Penelas. Before then, he served as Director of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust and Director of the South Florida Super Bowl Host Committee.
Through a network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations, NCLR works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans and reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas—assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health.
