With the famous words of one of our most influential civil rights leaders as inspiration, more than 120 University of Miami students participated in the national Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service on Monday, painting pillars and constructing a wooden fence and benches at Brownsville Middle School in Miami.
Te’Quan Taylor, president of United Black Students, which helped organize the contingent of UM student volunteers, said the day of service was a way of answering the question King posed in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1957: “What are you doing for others?”
Explained Taylor, “It helps reinforce the reason why we are celebrating the legacy of Dr. King and it brings members of the UM community together to contribute to the uplifting of Miami.”
