A New Twist on an Old Tradition

A New Twist on an Old Tradition

A longtime University of Miami tradition took on a new twist Sunday, when the President’s New Student Picnic was held on the University Center patio and Foote Green.

In previous years, the annual event, which welcomes UM's newest ’Canes to campus, had been staged offsite at the president’s residence. Hundreds of UM students enjoyed performances by the UM Band of the Hour and cheerleaders, demonstrations of a water-powered jetpack, midway-style games, tasty eats, and inspiring messages from President Julio Frenk, his wife, Felicia Knaul, and UM basketball coaches Katie Meier and Jim Larrañaga.

On Monday, it was back to the books, as the fall semester got underway following a whirlwind week when Frenk took the reins as UM’s sixth president and 1,800 freshmen joined the family of ’Canes.

More excitement follows in the days and weeks ahead when coaches and student-athletes will be on hand at the annual CanesFest celebration August 29 at the UM athletic facilities and when Frenk hosts his Town Hall Meeting September 10 at the BankUnited Center.
