Celebrating the U

Join the fun this week as the University of Miami welcomes back alumni and celebrates homecoming with a series of spirited events—in advance of Saturday’s game when the Hurricanes face the University of Virginia at Sun Life Stadium.

This year’s homecoming theme is “For My City,” which recognizes the spirit and tradition that makes Miami unique. Presented by the Homecoming Executive Committee and the Division of Student Affairs, the celebration includes Wednesday’s Hurricane March to the Knight Sports Complex, where the women’s volleyball team takes on FSU, and Thursday’s Hurricane Productions concert, featuring Waka Flocka Flame and T-Pain at the BankUnited Center.

The celebration continues Friday evening with the homecoming parade, block party, boat-burning ceremony, and fireworks show. Reggie Wayne, B.L.A. ’01, the UM Sports Hall of Famer who the Indianapolis Colts selected in the first round of the 2001 NFL Draft, will serve as grand marshal of the parade, which begins at 7 p.m. The boat burning and fireworks follow on Lake Osceola at 8:30 p.m.

Throughout the evening, students, families, and guests can enjoy food from Miami’s best food trucks, and rides and games near Merrick Drive.

And everybody is welcome to join the Alumni Association on Alumni Avenue for mojitos and jambalaya at a Mardi Gras-themed event that harkens back to the Carni Gras festivals students held on campus for 40 years.
