Students in the UM Scientific Diver Course take their final written exam underwater
Just Below the Surface

It's not a class finals you'll find everywhere.

But at the University of Miami, students in the Scientific Diver Course at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science go to great depths to show how much they learn. For about the past decade, students take their final written exam underwater in complete scuba gear.

If they finish the exam without touching the bottom of the pool or breaking the surface, they earn bonus points.

The course is part of the UM Scientific Diving Program and is designed to train scientists and students how to collect data underwater. Students enrolled in the program come from various disciplines ranging from archeology and chemistry to conservation and geology.
