A ’Canes Family Affair at Marlins Park

The 13th annual UM Family Night with the Miami Marlins lives up to its name.

More than 20,000 tickets were distributed to faculty and staff to enjoy a night at Marlins Park with their family and friends.

The Miami Marlins didn’t pull off a win, but the 13th annual UM family night was a hit for those in the extended 'Canes family who turned out in droves for a festival of fun for kids of all ages.

The 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates under breezy skies on a picture-perfect Saturday night couldn’t dim the spotlight on the U. Thousands of University of Miami faculty and staff and their families and friends showed up early for pregame activities that included batting practice, games, face painting, autograph sessions, and a raucous welcome from the Drumline.

Three 'Canes threw out ceremonial pitches—recently graduated Hurricanes wide receiver Braxton Berrios took the mound solo, while Provost Jeffrey Duerk and CEO Jacqueline Travisano did their toss in tandem. The biggest winners of the night, though, were students from the School of Communication and School of Education and Human Development who received scholarships from the Marlins Foundation.
