The Spring 2021 edition pays homage to the indomitable Hurricanes spirit—from Howard Schnellenberger’s legendary revival of the football program to new initiatives that position the University at the forefront of the tech revolution.

Before Howard Schnellenberger arrived in 1970 as head coach of Miami Hurricanes football, University officials considered scrapping the program entirely. But within four years, the once-floundering team notched its first national championship and began building its epic dynasty.

Schnellenberger’s impact at the University is the cover story of the new edition of Miami magazine, which is available online. The article highlights the late coach’s legendary perseverance, resilience, and ingenuity—all qualities that members of our University of Miami community have demonstrated throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Spring 2021 issue is a dynamic display of the people and platforms driving advances in data science, extreme weather forecasting, extended reality computing, and other innovations that have continued at full speed, despite the challenges of the pandemic. These, along with new programs to pursue racial justice and deepen cultural understanding, are ensuring that the University will achieve its greatest aspirations by 2025, as outlined in the Roadmap to Our New Century strategic plan.
