Laurie Silvers, chair of the University of Miami Board of Trustees and co-founder of the SyFy Channel, received the Margaret St. Germain Cornerstone Award from the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday.
Presented during the Equitable Advisors Businesswomen of the Year Awards luncheon, the award is given to a woman who excels in their profession or business.
“Laurie is a creator, a collaborator, and a convener. Those are the qualities that we as a chamber value very highly,” said Mark Trowbridge, president and CEO of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. “She has always led at the most senior level, and in doing so brings her own creative touch to that office—through philanthropy as well as service.”
The Cornerstone Award is named for Margaret St. Germain, the first woman chair of the chamber (1975-1976) and the owner of Elliott’s Office Supply, which was a local business in Coral Gables at the time.
Silvers received her accolade at the luncheon, held at the Hotel Colonnade. The previous recipient of the Margaret St. Germain Cornerstone Award was Kim Ng, the first woman general manager in Major League Baseball and general manager of the Miami Marlins.
