As summer temperatures soar, locals and tourists alike are seeking refreshing ways to beat the heat in South Florida. Not that you ever need an excuse to indulge in a sweet scoop, but Sunday, July 16, is National Ice Cream Day, an annual celebration on the third Sunday of July established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan.

South Florida’s diverse culinary scene offers a delectable array of frozen delights. From traditional flavors to exotic creations, here are some recommendations—listed in alphabetical order—of local ice cream locations where you can satisfy your sweet tooth.

Azucar Ice Cream Company

Nestled in the Little Havana neighborhood, Azucar Ice Cream Company celebrates Miami's Cuban heritage by infusing traditional flavors with a modern twist. Treat your taste buds to their signature Abuela Maria, a delightful blend of vanilla ice cream with guava, cream cheese, and Maria cookies. With its vibrant décor and lively atmosphere, Azucar provides a cultural immersion that perfectly complements its flavorful creations. Also, a few flavors of Azucar ice cream are available at the Miami Joe Coffee shop in the lobby at the Loews Coral Gables Hotel.

Cry Baby Creamery & Bakehouse

This hidden gem, located in Palmetto Bay, has something for everyone. Their luscious ice cream flavors—including “Espumita Boss” churned with cold brew coffee from Per’La Coffee, and indulgent, homemade cookies that boast a rich and thick texture—are a must. For the full experience, consider a Boxcar, an Oreo ice cream sandwiched between two of their homemade chocolate chip cookies.

Jaxon’s Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant

In Broward County, Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant in Dania Beach is a nationally recognized eatery that offers not just ice cream but lots of old-fashioned candy and an All-American food menu. Ice cream and toppings are made on the premises and the “Kitchen Sink” (a container with multiple scoops of ice cream and toppings) is often brought out to celebrate special occasions.

Mr. Kream

For those seeking a nostalgic experience, Mr. Kream in North Miami Beach delivers a delightful trip down memory lane. This retro-themed ice cream parlor pays homage to the ’80s and ’90s, offering classic flavors with a playful twist. Enjoy a cone of Frooty Pebbles, Cookie Monster, or Unicorn Magic while immersing yourself in the vibrant neon décor and vintage arcade games.

Situated in the picturesque Miami Design District, Nanndi Homemade Frozen Cream is renowned for its artisanal approach to ice cream making. Using premium ingredients, they craft small-batch frozen creams that elevate traditional flavors to new heights. Well, Richie’s Gourmet Italian Ices and Cappuccino, operating out of a small hut in Oakland Park since 1993, offers rich and creamy cold treats without the lactose, as well as coffee. Chocolate, vanilla chip, lemon or lime, and coconut are favorites. And if you don’t have to worry about milk products, you can get a gelati, which is a mixture of ice cream and Italian ice.
