September is National Preparedness Month. As activity increases on campus, we are reminded that campus safety and emergency preparedness are essential to making the most of our time at the University of Miami. Follow these key steps to keep yourself safe and prepared for emergencies on campus.

  1. Stay informed.

Verify that your mobile number is up to date in CaneLink if you are a student, or Workday if you are an employee, to ensure you receive emergency alerts from the University of Miami. Visit prepare.miami.edu/enn for more information about the Emergency Notification Network (ENN).

  1. Get involved.

The University of Miami Police Department (UMPD) is a full-service police department available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. UMPD is located on the first floor of the Flipse Building; the non-emergency number is (305) 284-6666. For all emergencies, dial 911. They offer a variety of services and programs including safety escorts, self-defense training, and free bike and scooter locks. Visit umpd.miami.edu/services-and-programs for more information about safety resources available to you. To register for emergency preparedness training, visit events.miami.edu/oem. You also can follow UMPD @UMPolice and the Office of Emergency Management @UMiamiENN on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to stay up to date with involvement opportunities.

  1. Have a plan.

We are entering the peak of hurricane season and now is the time to ensure you are prepared. Decide now where you will go if you are forced to evacuate for a hurricane. If you live on campus, you must evacuate for a Category 3 or greater hurricane. Visit prepare.miami.edu/before-emergency/hurricane-preparedness for more information about hurricane preparedness.

  1. Report suspicious activity.

Our campus community plays a huge role in preventing emergencies by reporting suspicious activity. Be aware of your surroundings and do not hesitate to report anything that does not seem right to you, by calling (305) 284-6666. Save the University of Miami Police Department’s number in your phone. Remember, if you See Something, Say Something!
