The Toppel Career Center offers students avenues to connect with potential employers.

The Toppel Career Center aims to ensure that students have the support needed to progress to their careers through its programming, networking experiences, and career fairs. To propel students into their desired fields, the center has developed upcoming events on campus that will prepare them for interviews and provide internship and job opportunities.

First up, on Wednesday, Sept. 13, Toppel is hosting the Employer Practice Interviews and Critique (EPIC) program, which pairs students with recruiters for a LinkedIn review, resume critique, or practice interview.

Then, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, a BreakThru Diversity Mixer career event designed for underrepresented student populations at the University of Miami will connect them with employers who value and promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

The center will host its signature recruiting event, Job and Internship Expo, on Wednesday, Sept. 20, starting at 1 p.m. at the Watsco Center on the Coral Gables Campus. More than 100 companies from various industries will be in attendance including government, nonprofit, science, technology, health care, and more. Through Handshake, a college site for students to find jobs, many can preview employers that will be attending the expo. Also on Sept. 20, Toppel will host a Graduate School Fair in the same location to connect students with representatives from a variety of graduate and professional programs.

“Job and Internship Expo is an opportunity for students to make direct connections with recruiters and ask questions about what skills they look for in candidates,” said Ali Rodriguez, executive director of career services. “It also gives them a chance to learn about new companies that have jobs and internships in their areas of interest. Students can take advantage of the fact that these organizations are coming to them, and making a good impression in person goes a long way.”

An Accounting Career Fair will be hosted on Friday, Sept. 22, where firms from the “Big 4,” the four largest companies in the world—Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler (KPMG), and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)—will be in attendance. In addition, there will be government agencies looking for employees.

Students can meet leading engineering and technology organizations at the Engineering Career Day on Friday, Sept. 29. The final career event of the fall semester, Healthcare Career Fair, will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 11. The event will be held virtually via the Handshake platform.

Students attending these events are encouraged to dress in professional business attire, bring resumes in hand, and to make sure their Handshake accounts are updated. (Some employers prefer working directly through Handshake.) Registration is not required for any of the events but is highly recommended. Attendance is free—all you need is your ’Cane Card.

“The staff at Toppel is excited to help you prepare for Expo,” said Rodriguez. “Visit drop-in advising in-person or virtually to talk to a career coach about creating your game plan.”
