‘A Collector's Journey: Susan Grant Lewin and the Art Jewelry World’

Preeminent collector Susan Grant Lewin traces her passion for art jewelry back to her work in the 1980s and 1990s as a journalist and communications executive. Author of one of the premier books on then-rising American jewelry artists, Lewin has followed the careers of these artisans as well as those of their international counterparts and emerging talents for four decades. Although it is not the only exhibition to feature Lewin’s impressive holdings, “A Collector's Journey” is the first to survey Lewin’s long-standing commitment to this phenomenon, which has evolved from isolated pockets of artists creating conceptual, mostly wearable statements made from mundane materials into today’s global movement.

‘Play-House’

Germane Barnes, architect, designer, and associate professor at the School of Architecture, worked with students in the Community, Housing & Identity Lab to create “Play-House.” Paying homage to a definitive style of home frequently seen throughout parts of South Florida, including Overtown, Coconut Grove and beyond, Barnes activates the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Paradise Courtyard with a pared-down replica of a shotgun house. The installation serves as a site of play and exploration, transforming the building into a playscape that balances recreation with learning. Visitors can explore the history of these homes through VR-activated archives. By stripping down the dwelling to the studs, ‘Play-House’ lays bare the story of this history. Activating images from turn-of-the-century newspaper articles and resources from the Black Archives, this work aims to solidify these spaces and stories in our collective memory.
