Apply for the Excellence in Civic Engagement award
Deadline to submit is Monday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m.
The Excellence in Civic Engagement award is intended to recognize the University’s most involved faculty members who work with undergraduate students to recognize community-identified needs through community-engaged learning courses and community-based research. Faculty interested may submit the completed application along with the supplemental materials to the Office of Civic and Community Engagement at civicengagement@miami.edu. The applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty members and administration officials. Award winners will be recognized—along with a number of other awardees—on April 24 at the university’s Celebration of Involvement awards ceremony. Hosted by the Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development, the ceremony highlights the work of student leaders, University faculty and staff members, and community partners.

The University will host Miami XR 2025, a two-day conference with industry experts, tech visionaries, artists, and university scholars from around the globe exploring the latest trends and innovations in XR technology. One Book, One U keynote event with author Daisy Hernández
Thursday, Feb. 13, at 6 p.m.
Join author Daisy Hernández for a discussion of her book, “The Kissing Bug: A True Story of a Family, an Insect, and a Nation's Neglect of a Deadly Disease,” the 2024-2025 One Book, One U selection at the University of Miami. In this powerful memoir, Hernández reveals her family’s connection to Chagas disease, exposing its hidden impact in the U.S. and the systemic issues that allow it to persist. A Q&A will follow the presentation, and the author will be available for a book signing afterward. Register to attend the free in-person event at the Kislak Center on the Coral Gables Campus.
Learn the fundamentals of mindfulness.
Wednesdays at 4 p.m. through May 7
Hosted by the University of Miami Libraries, these 45-minute sessions offer opportunities to learn and practice the fundamentals of mindfulness in community with others. Beginners are welcome. Sessions include guided meditations and periods of questions and responses facilitated by Kelly Miller, a certified mindfulness teacher and associate dean at UM Libraries; professor Scott Rogers, director of the University of Miami School of Law’s Mindfulness in Law Program; or a guest teacher.
