Surrounded by ancient relics and landmark views of some of Europe’s oldest and most vibrant cities, undergraduate students forge unforgettable memories in the Start Abroad program. Since its launch in 2014, the program has expanded, becoming a transformative opportunity for spring starters who can earn college credits that will transfer toward their degree at the University of Miami. Students can enroll in the Start Abroad program hosted in Rome, Italy; Dublin, Ireland; and Barcelona, Spain. During the fall semester, 75 University students participated in the Rome program.
“After discovering the program on the admitted students website, I knew I had to apply, as I saw it as a great opportunity for personal growth to go away from home for four months,” said Luke Baumstark, a first-year student studying business analytics and economics.
For many young adults starting a new chapter of life, especially one far from home, can be intimidating. The Start Abroad program equips participating students with vital resources to succeed, including multiple informational sessions and meetings.
Students have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in new cultures while also learning valuable life skills. With Europe’s ease of travel between countries, many took the opportunity to explore beyond Italy, visiting scenic destinations.
“I traveled all over Europe,” said Baumstark. “I had the opportunity to go to the Netherlands, Germany, various areas of Italy, and many more incredible places. I would never have had that opportunity if I didn’t go abroad.”
The American University of Rome (AUR), where students take courses, also organizes field trips to different regions of Italy, such as the Amalfi Coast and Florence. These excursions allow students to explore the country’s diverse history, culture, and landscapes, making their experience even more unique and impactful.
Not only do students study Italian culture inside and outside of the classroom, but they also immerse themselves in a new environment, embracing independence and personal growth.
“It was an amazing experience. I had the opportunity to meet new people and create friendships that I still cherish,” said Baumstark, who participated in Start Abroad in Rome during fall 2024. “When I see the students I met in Rome on campus, we always say hi, and it’s comforting to have that community on campus, especially as a new student.”
The experience fosters lifelong friendships and even helps students further adapt as they arrive on campus in the spring. The friendships fostered in Rome continue throughout students’ collegiate careers.
“Going abroad three years ago was the best decision I ever made,” said Amber Hatfield, a senior studying criminology and political science who participated in Start Abroad in Rome in fall 2021. “Many of the friendships I made during my program have lasted, and I see them as lifelong friends. I’ll always be grateful to Rome for that.”
Students admitted for Spring 2026 may start the application process in March 2025. For details, including program deadlines and requirements, contact startabroad@miami.edu.
