The University of Miami has launched its sixth annual Giving Day, a high-energy 24-hour celebration of community-driven philanthropy. This year’s event takes on special significance, coming just five days before the University turns 100—marking a century of achievements and an even brighter future.
Giving Day is a powerful reminder of how collective giving—regardless of the size of individual gifts—can create a lasting impact. The event not only showcases the generosity of passionate donors, but it also raises awareness of important causes and initiatives that positively impact the U.
Several alumni are getting in on the action with matches and challenges to inspire increased giving.
Alumnus Angel Alvarez, a 1980 graduate, and his family is matching gifts to USTAAR, the University Student Startup Accelerator, at a two-to-one rate, up to $1 million. Alumnus Carmine Parente, who graduated in 1989, is matching up to $500,000 in gifts to the M. Mann - C. Parente Scholarship Endowment Fund, which supports the Band of the Hour. Thanks to Parente’s generosity, the first 100 donors to give to the Travis Quinn Opportunity Scholarship Fund—benefitting student-musicians who have triumphed over adversity—will unlock an extra $100,000 in donations.
Stuart Miller, a member of the University of Miami Board of Trustees and School of Law graduate, is matching every dollar given to the School of Law Scholarship Fund up to $1.5 million so that aspiring lawyers can receive the support they need to thrive. Double alumnus Wayne Chaplin, who is also vice chair of the Board of Trustees, is matching gifts of $50,000 or more to the Courtroom Renovation Fund up to $1.5 million, helping to provide state-of-the-art learning spaces for future law students.
Alumnus Bob Mendelson is hosting an all-day Leaderboard Challenge, donating to the top three schools or colleges with the most donors, the top three programs or units with the most donors, the top three student organizations with the most donors, and the top three Canes Communities with the most donors. In addition, Mendelson also is matching a portion of gifts to the Miami Herbert Business School MBA Scholarship Fund.
The day also features Power Hours—one-hour periods when gifts can yield some Canes merchandise.
