As the fall semester begins, we welcome new and returning Canes to explore our dynamic campuses. Over the summer, the University established new and innovative access to technology and research resources, expanded dining options, and installed a state-of-the-art solar-powered charging table—all designed to support Canes on their academic and professional journey. The market is open between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. every Wednesday from Aug. 20 through Nov. 19 at Miller Circle on the Coral Gables Campus, and every Thursday year-round at the Fred Cowell Mall, in front of the Louis Calder Memorial Library, on the Medical Campus. Parking and Transportation
New ADA Permit:
Long-term or permanently disabled University students and employees now have the option to apply for the ADA permit, granting access to park in a designated disabled space as well as any unlabeled parking spot in all standard color zones. Applicants are eligible to apply for the permit by submitting documentation in person to the Office of Parking and Transportation. Visit Parking and Transportation for more information, including application documents and rules.Micromobility Devices Policy
Starting this fall, electric scooters and similar devices are restricted on campus, no longer allowed on pedestrian pathways, and are banned from entering any University building. Electric scooters and other micromobility devices must be parked in designated outdoor racks and are prohibited from parking near trees, benches, or handrails. Due to fire safety risks, indoor storage and charging of devices are strictly prohibited. Violations may result in citations, impoundment, or disciplinary action. Registration of your micromobility device is required through UMPD and includes a free U-lock and decal.Exceptions to this policy include motorized wheelchairs and mobility assistance devices approved through the Office of Disability Services and the Office of Workplace Equity and Inclusion. Electric Vehicle Charging
The University’s Electric Vehicle (EV) charging program is revising its access to a demand-based pay structure. Charging rates begin at $0.12 per kWh with a four hour daily charging limit. Freebee, the University’s free transportation service to locations on and around campus, is expanding its hours and fleet. Students can now request rides seven days a week from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. during active class schedules in the fall and spring semesters. The program has grown to include three vehicles, reducing wait times to an average of 15 minutes and increasing its service area. Learn more about the service, including how to book a ride. -
Renewables at the U
ECO Solar Haven
Sponsored by the Student Government ECO Agency, students can now study outside and under the shade of the ECO Solar Haven. This solar charging table can power eight laptops and eight mobile phones and is located next to the entrance of the James M. Cox Science Building. With a mission to reduce the University’s carbon footprint, the Whitten University Center (UC) Swimming Pool was upgraded with a geothermal heat pump. Instead of using a traditional natural gas-powered pump, the UC Pool’s geothermal heat pump uses the difference in temperature between the surface and deep underground, providing heating or cooling without burning any fossil fuel. First-Year Cup
Students, are you ready to compete in the University’s newest tradition? The First-Year Cup seeks to promote social integration and a smooth transition for the residential first-year class through friendly competition among the Residential Colleges. Residents accrue points throughout the academic year by participating in events, activities, and various challenge-by-choice competitions that build relationships and lasting memories. At the end of each month, the college with the most points takes over the leaderboard. Find out more. -
