It’s a Cotton Bowl clash for the ages, a matchup between two of college football’s most storied programs.
But when the Miami Hurricanes face the defending national champion Ohio State Buckeyes in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoffs on Dec. 31 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, it won’t be the first time the two schools have met.

Here’s a look back at the matchups between the two iconic programs.
Sept. 10, 1977
The game at Ohio Stadium in Columbus marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools. It turned out to be a defensive struggle, as the Buckeyes came out on top 10-0, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
Aug. 29, 1999 (Kickoff Classic)
The two teams wouldn’t meet again until 1999, when they squared off at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, in the Kickoff Classic. Hurricanes quarterback Kenny Kelly completed 17 of 25 passes for 245 yards, passing for one touchdown and running for another, as Miami defeated Ohio State 23-12.
Jan. 3, 2003 (Fiesta Bowl)
The Buckeyes defeated Miami 31-24 in double overtime at the Fiesta Bowl to win the BCS title. The matchup featured a multitude of future NFL players, as 37 of the total starters on both sides were eventually selected in the NFL Draft.
Sept. 11, 2010
In a highly anticipated week 2 college football matchup, the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the No. 12 Miami Hurricanes 36-24 in Columbus.
Sept. 17, 2011
Miami quarterback Jacory Harris completed 16-of-23 for 123 yards with two touchdowns, and the Hurricanes rushing attack accounted for 240 yards on 42 carries, as Miami cruised to a 24-6 victory.
The 2011 contest is the last meeting between the Hurricanes and Buckeyes. The all-time series is officially tied at 2-2, as Ohio State’s 36-24 win over the Canes in 2010 was vacated due to NCAA sanctions from the Tattoo Gate scandal where Buckeye football players received improper benefits.
