For 16 years a successful investment banker, Patrick Steel became the chief executive officer of Politico, described as the “ESPN of politics,” in May 2017 and in his introductory memo wrote: “I know what a company is supposed to be like, look like, and smell like to succeed.”

Politico launched in 2006 with the purpose of covering Capitol Hill and was initially titled the Capitol Leader. In a recent assessment of the U.S. journalism company published in the Washingtonian, Steel suggested that Politico, despite the challenges of the pandemic, was operating from a position of strength and that the publication continues to thrive.

“Our mission of providing essential, trusted, and non-partisan information is exactly the tonic that is needed to effect and inspire change at a truly historic moment in history,” said Steel.

“The key to our success is drawn from the indispensable nature of our journalism and content,” said Steel. He pointed also to the company’s strides to introduce new products and increase online revenue and the publication’s strong coverage of emerging topics such as criminal reform and racial justice.

Steel’s talk, part of the University of Miami Patti and Allan Herbert Business School Virtual Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series, takes place Thursday, Oct. 1 at 5 p.m. Go here to register.
